Process data

Measuring task: Measure the flow rate into the solvent-containing exhaust gas to manage the combustion process of the combustion plant

Measuring points: exhaust gas supply point, natural gas supply point, air supply in TNV (RTO), exhaust gas after TNV

Measuring range: typically 5...15 m/s

Process pressure: slight under pressure, over pressure

Process environment: Typically ATEX Zone 2, sometimes SIL 2 required

Applications

Thermal afterburning is an exhaust gas and exhaust gas cleaning process. Air Hygiene This is an optimal process because exhaust/exhaust gases other than sulfur, halogens or other thermally non-decomposable foreign matter are converted into harmless substances water (H2O) or carbon dioxide (CO2). This process is ideal for VOC-containing gases with VOC dust collector efficiencies exceeding 1.99%, with a starting value of 8g/Nm³. This way the required limit values can be adhered to.

Quick start and stop allows use under highly fluctuating process conditions.

Special flow sensors measure the gas flow into the post-combustion plant, thereby regulating the process and ensuring optimal combustion.

Thermal Afterburning – Exhaust Gas Cleaning Management Process

Process exhaust gases are cleaned where they may cause damage to humans and the environment. In particular volatile organic compounds (VOCs) must be converted. Natural VOCs occur during natural putrefaction and degradation processes.

Volatile organic compounds are produced from incomplete combustion (from traffic) or industrial processes. They are mainly used for exhaust air purification, especially in surface technology, paint and glue production, the printing, textile and furniture industries as well as the pharmaceutical, chemical and ceramic industries.

Energy Savings of Regeneration After Combustion (RNV/RTO)

Thermal or thermal regenerative post-combustion is a process for cleaning industrial waste gases. The contaminated air is directed into the combustion chamber and burned at temperatures between 700°C and 1,200°C.

It takes a lot of energy to heat the combustion chamber to the required temperature. In order to reuse the energy, the cleaned hot exhaust gas is released through a heat exchanger. There, it releases part of its energy into the incoming exhaust gases and thus into the already preheated combustion chamber.

Fuel is required to operate the combustion chamber, usually natural gas and oxygen. Oxygen is added via ambient air.

The primary energy used in the oxidation process depends largely on the amount and calorific value of the substance. The combustion process must be adjusted to the exhaust gas volume. First the exhaust gas inflow must be measured, and then the natural gas and supply air volumes must be measured. These are the most important values for managing the entire process.

Measuring points for solvent-containing exhaust gases (VOC)

Different measurement points require different measurement techniques. The most challenging aspect is the exhaust gas supply. The gases measured here can be highly contaminated with VOCs and therefore highly corrosive to the sensor material. In some places, it is intentionally enhanced with VOCs so it can be used more efficiently in post-combustion plants. It may also contain particles that adhere to the sensor, affecting the measurement results. Our DOWESTON Vortex sensor is the measuring instrument of choice as it provides reliable measurement results even in VOC gases containing particles.

Gas, usually natural gas, can be measured with our thermal flow sensors. The sensor provides standard flow and mass flow directly. Alternatively, measured values can be transmitted via M-Bus or Wifi.

Advantages of Vortex sensors in thermal post-assembly equipment

The Vortex sensor is one of the most commonly used sensors when measuring gas flow. They use a turbine to measure gas flow and have no moving parts during the measurement process, making them very strong and durable.

For the measurement of solvent-containing off-gas (VOC) in the RTO process, DOWESTON's Vortex sensor is the best choice. Available in a variety of materials including stainless steel, titanium or Hastelloy, our Vortex sensors provide reliable measurements in VOC gases that are extremely corrosive and contain particulate matter.

Additionally, the long life and minimal maintenance of our Vortex sensors means lower operating costs for combustion equipment. Our sensors have been rigorously tested and verified many times and have been widely used in many challenging applications and provide reliable measurement results.

Recommended products

DOWESTON's Vortex probe FTV-1600 is a standard compact device that can adjust the insertion depth as needed, making it ideal for turbine measurements in RTO processes. At the same time, our Vortex probes VA40...ZG8 explosion-proof/explosion-proof models can be used in explosive environments.

In addition, we offer the thermal probe TA10 and the thermal measuring tube TA Di, which can be used to measure the temperature of gas and exhaust gases. Our product data sheets provide further details on all products.
