flow meterHow to perform calibration and what are the methods to calibrate a flow meter?

Flow meter calibration can be cumbersome and complex, but a new industry standard for measuring liquid flow will change your situation.

Flow meters often need to be calibrated, which means that their performance must be compared to a standard, and the flow meter's deviations from that standard must be determined and corrected.

This procedure is necessary for most process measurements because there are a variety of errors that can lead to inaccuracies that often go undetected. For example. The measuring rod of the Vortex flow meter is corroded, the pitot tube flow meter is clogged, and the rotor of the turbine flow meter may be worn.

Factors such as improper installation, sediment buildup, and pipe fit modifications can also have long-term effects on the flow meter's accuracy.

How to calibrate a flow meter?

The deviation of a flow meter from a standard can be measured in two ways: the standard meter method using a flow meter or by weighing the mass flow rate.

Standard flow meters are calibrated for peak accuracy by designated accredited laboratories. These laboratories are accredited laboratories that have obtained flow meter certification qualifications. Subsequently, this means that calibration to master standard flow meter in such laboratories will be supported by metrology certification and traceability.

The second method of flow meter calibration involves weighing the amount of fluid flowing through the meter during the calibration process. Measurements are usually made using scales which must be extremely accurate. This method is generally considered the most accurate way to measure flow.

Flow meters can also be calibrated in the field, also known as "wet" calibration. Additionally, on-site calibration is usually not an option in most applications because it is impractical to challenge an installed flow meter with a fixed volume of water, and no site can simulate the volume that exactly meets the metering requirements.

Calibration is not absolute

Any deviation from the laboratory conditions for which the equipment was calibrated may result in inaccuracies when the meter is used for its intended application. For example, using a flow meter calibrated in clean water to measure wastewater with high concentrations of suspended solids can greatly affect accuracy.

Unexpected turbulence introduced into the piping system upstream of the instrument can cause performance to differ significantly from its calibrated performance. The length of the pipe upstream and downstream of the equipment, the pipe material, and even the roughness of the inner surface of the pipe can all affect accuracy. The angle of incidence at which the device is mounted can also affect accuracy and functionality. In fact, many systematic, random, and spurious errors lead to inaccuracies under real-world conditions. Worse, these errors are often not easily observed or measured in closed piping systems, making them difficult to detect.

Answer

Flow meters with no moving parts, such as ultrasonic flow meters and electromagnetic flow meters, eliminate the variables surrounding mechanical degradation. Because these flow meters lack fluid-invasive parts, the technology used to detect and measure flow is not affected by erosion or sediment, allowing the device to maintain its accuracy and reliability. Magnetic flow meter are also less susceptible to errors caused by pipe configuration. For example, DOWESTON's FTE-1600 Series Flow Meter is capable of providing accurate measurements (measured at +/- 0.25%) in virtually any location it can be installed, even near elbows and other areas with no noticeable linear motion. This advanced flow meter technology also offers a 300:1 turndown ratio. Combined with its other advantages, this electromagnetic flow meter can simply make all mechanical flow meter and the need for calibration obsolete.
